HSDNI’s 12th Sustainability Collaborative Conference: Advancing Diversity and Inclusion for Sustainable Societies
November 5–6, 2026 | University of Bristol, United Kingdom
The Holistic Sustainable Development Network International (HSDNI), in collaboration with the Centre for Environmental Law and Sustainability (CELS), the Bristol Socio-Legal Centre at the University of Bristol Law School, and PROYASHEE, is pleased to announce the 12th Sustainability Collaborative Conference, alongside the 2nd Meeting of the Law and Indigenous Sustainability Network, taking place on November 5–6, 2026, at the University of Bristol, United Kingdom.
Under the theme “Diversity and Inclusion for Sustainable Societies,” this international conference will bring together researchers, academics, policymakers, professionals, community organizations, and individuals with lived experiences from Indigenous communities and countries across Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America.
The conference will provide an interdisciplinary platform to explore how diversity, inclusion, social justice, and collaborative governance can contribute to building more equitable, resilient, and sustainable societies.
Sustainability Beyond Economic Growth
Sustainable development is not simply about economic growth or environmental protection. It requires a holistic approach that recognizes the interconnected relationships between economic prosperity, environmental sustainability, social well-being, cultural diversity, and human dignity.
HSDNI believes that sustainable societies can only be achieved when economic development is balanced with environmental responsibility and the protection of social and cultural practices, traditions, and heritage.
As global communities continue to face environmental challenges, social inequalities, institutional barriers, and competing development priorities, the need for inclusive and collaborative approaches has become increasingly important.
The 12th Sustainability Collaborative Conference seeks to contribute to this global conversation by examining how diverse values, experiences, institutions, and knowledge systems can support meaningful transitions toward sustainable societies.
Diversity and Inclusion: Building Sustainable Communities Together
The conference theme, “Diversity and Inclusion for Sustainable Societies,” emphasizes the importance of recognizing diverse perspectives and experiences in developing policies, institutions, and practices that promote sustainability.
Diversity and inclusion are essential to understanding the social dimensions of sustainable development. Communities are shaped by different cultural traditions, social identities, economic circumstances, environmental experiences, and forms of knowledge.
However, these differences are not always adequately represented in decision-making processes.
The conference will explore the strengths and challenges of diversity and inclusion in sustainable development, including:
-
Social inequality, discrimination, and barriers to participation.
-
Indigenous knowledge, cultural heritage, and environmental sustainability.
-
Inclusive institutions, governance, and policymaking.
-
Community participation and collaborative approaches to development.
-
The relationship between social justice, human rights, and sustainability.
-
Opportunities for integrating diverse knowledge systems into sustainable development practices.
By bringing together scholars, practitioners, policymakers, and community members, the conference aims to encourage critical dialogue and identify practical approaches to creating more inclusive and sustainable societies.
Advancing Indigenous Sustainability and Pluriversal Perspectives
An important component of the conference will be the 2nd Meeting of the Law and Indigenous Sustainability Network.
This meeting will provide an opportunity for members of the network to discuss collaborative research initiatives and explore the relationships between Indigenous and Western knowledge systems, state and non-state institutions, and national and international approaches to sustainability.
The discussions will contribute to developing knowledge around the emerging concept of Pluriversal Law, informed by diverse sustainability experiences and the interactions between different legal, cultural, and governance systems.
Recognizing Indigenous knowledge, experiences, and perspectives is essential to understanding sustainability beyond conventional institutional frameworks.
The network seeks to encourage meaningful engagement with Indigenous communities and explore how different knowledge systems can contribute to more inclusive and context-sensitive approaches to sustainable development.
International Collaboration for a Sustainable Future
The 12th Sustainability Collaborative Conference represents HSDNI’s continued commitment to international collaboration, interdisciplinary research, and community-based knowledge exchange.
Through partnerships with academic institutions, nonprofit organizations, researchers, and community stakeholders, HSDNI seeks to strengthen connections between research and practical action.
The University of Bristol provides an important academic and collaborative setting for this year’s conference, bringing together expertise in environmental law, sustainability, equity, diversity, inclusion, and community engagement.
This international collaboration reflects the importance of working across institutional, geographical, and disciplinary boundaries to address complex sustainability challenges.
HSDNI recognizes that sustainable development requires collective responsibility, meaningful participation, and cooperation among individuals, communities, institutions, and governments.
A Platform for Research, Dialogue, and Knowledge Mobilization
The conference will provide opportunities for participants to share research findings, exchange experiences, discuss emerging challenges, and develop collaborative ideas.
By connecting academic research with lived experiences and practical knowledge, the conference aims to promote meaningful dialogue and support the development of inclusive sustainability initiatives.
HSDNI encourages researchers, policymakers, professionals, community organizations, and individuals interested in sustainable development to participate in this collaborative platform.
The conference will be held in a hybrid format, enabling both in-person and online participation and supporting international engagement.
Continuing HSDNI’s Commitment to Holistic Sustainable Development
Since its establishment, the Holistic Sustainable Development Network International has worked to promote sustainable development through research, knowledge mobilization, collaboration, and network building.
HSDNI recognizes that environmental, economic, and social systems are interconnected and that sustainability requires approaches that consider their relationships rather than addressing them independently.
Through its conferences, research activities, publications, and community partnerships, HSDNI seeks to encourage practical models of sustainable development that respect cultural diversity, strengthen social inclusion, protect environmental resources, and promote human well-being.
The 12th Sustainability Collaborative Conference continues this commitment by creating opportunities for international dialogue, collaborative research, and shared learning.
